In this paper, a range of advanced manufacturing processes for a full-scale tidal turbine blade are being developed. The analysis used in this study is based on the same pyramid concept that is used by Lopes et al. [ 15], which is summarised graphically in Fig. 2. With its predictability, tidal power could be an attractive addition to the portfolio of renewable energy sources for electricity generation. For that to happen, engineers need to be able to test the components that will have to operate in the severe offshore conditions around the British Isles. Geoff Watts describes the features of FastBlade, a new facility that can carry out large-scale accelerated testing of blades for tidal power generation.The manufacturing processes for each of the preforms are broken down into four stages, which are illustrated in Fig. 17, and are as follows: Once the stage of layup is complete, the breather membrane and vacuum bag are placed on top of the ply layup, as seen in Fig. 17b. The vacuum bag is sealed to the tooling with a high-temperature double-sided adhesive tape. The game is incredibly fun and overall well-put-together, but I do have a couple of gripes. First, as much as I love the character progression as a concept, I thought that I would be able to make my character better than what actually seems possible by the end of the game (unless that is all you do). I didn’t expect to be able to max out everything and knew there would be tough decisions, but it still feels like by the end of the game, even if you win, your character isn’t ready to be the hero of the city. They may be great at rolling a lot of dice, but can they pull off impressive stunts, or do they have a bunch of abilities to help them be a better hero? Probably not. Or they’re just a tiny bit good at everything, but not very impressive in anything.

In line with its green policies, the EU’s €26.7 million FORWARD-2030 project aims to accelerate the commercial deployment of tidal energy alongside wind generation, battery storage, and green hydrogen production. Its objectives are to reduce the LCoE of tidal energy, enhance its environmental and societal acceptance, prepare for future volume manufacturing of equipment, further reduce carbon emissions, and enhance tidal power’s integration with other energy systems. The scheme is supported by a pan- European consortium and led by Orbital Marine. As part of the initial run of testing, FastBlade could fully commission the unique digital displacement hydraulic system as well as the bespoke control software. FastBlade plans to use the lessons learned from the LoadTide project to further improve both the controllability and energy efficiency of future tests. Levelling up The project plans to increase the area harnessed by Scottish tidal technology company Orbital Marine Power to generate power – known as the rotor swept area – by 70 percent, to more than 1,000 square metres.
