Description

It tells the story of a young boy whose parents are upset because his imaginary friend is a bit too pushy and argumentative and percocious. printing of 1984 edition:- Synopsis: Matthew, they thought, was just going through a phase of talking to himself. Gore that he/she/it is having trouble communicating while using Matthew's limited 12-year-old vocabulary. That is how it has come to install itself inside the head of young Matthew, 11 years old and hitherto unremarkable. Although The Day of the Triffids (1951) is fairly well known – in fact, the name ‘triffid’ for a large plant has become part of the English dictionary – many of those who recognise the word triffid rarely know the story from which it came.

She has come to say goodbye, because her presence has attracted undue attention to Matthew, and the powers that be want to get hold of Chocky and her superior scientific knowledge. It is quite simply a page-turner, maintaining suspense to the very end and vividly conjuring the circumstances of a crippled and menacing world, and of the fear and sense of betrayal that pervade it.

Muy recomendable, corto, rápido de leer y una muestra más de porque Wyndham fue (y es) uno de los más grandes, aunque inusuales autores de ciencia ficción británica. The ending, a salvation of an extremely dubious sort, leaves the reader pondering how truly ephemeral our version of civilization is. Wyndham does a great job of creating a very realistic family and presenting how such a regular family might deal with an irregular situation that is impacting their beloved child. The Chrysalids comes heart-wrenchingly close to being John Wyndham’s most powerful and profound work.

He’s one of those guys who wouldn’t have noticed the sixties were swinging unless you tied him to a table and force fed him LSD. David and Mary become increasingly worried, they don’t know how to help their son or even if he really needs help. By using Matthew's adoptive father as the narrator Wyndham is able to employ him as the voice of reason contrasting him with the emotional response of his adoptive mother. From John Wyndham, author of The Day of the Triffids, comes this chilling tale of a normal boy confronted with abnormal circumstances. I have no memory of this in the other three Wyndham books I read but then I read them an eternity ago. When the questions Chocky asks become too advanced and, frankly, too odd for teachers to answer, Matthew’s parents start to wonder if Chocky might be something far stranger than a figment of their son’s imagination. a pleasant surprise, considering that "Trouble With Lichen" had been a rather dry, fully adult story. The children of The Chrysalids use their talents to help one another, as do the children of The Midwich Cuckoos—all the alien girls are in touch with one another, as are all the alien boys. Although there is nothing sexual about the relationship between them (that would be wrong and disturbing on any number of levels), there is something to be said for an otherwise ordinary boy poised on the brink of teenage development having his mind taken over by an ‘alien’ female. I think it compares quite favorably to the Riverman, a more modern novel vaunted for the same technique.

Could “Chocky” perhaps not be a part of Matt after all, but instead a separate distinct being, from outer or inner space, perhaps with his or her own definite agenda? And he seems to be developing odd skills – like suddenly being able to draw, even though his pictures are distinctly odd, or understanding binary maths. Our narrator strikes us as being an ideal Dad, compassionate and wise; the perfect balance for Mary's more emotional reactions. There was a creepiness to it, but it was also surprisingly sweet, with a lovely if unbalanced friendship, and a family who care about their child and do their best to support him through an odd situation. A]bsolutely and completely brilliant… The Chrysalids is a top-notch piece of sci-fi that should be enjoyed for generations yet to come.
