About this deal

Also I would like to highlight how good MTMs are in creating phantom center feeling. You may see VOXs, bass drums, snare and bass as if in the palm of your hand. Your studio monitors – while not as exciting as your plugin synths, keyboards and even the computer you use – are the most important item in your production armoury. Being able to hear mistakes in your mixing – which good monitors will reveal – means you can sort them out. The Desktop setting can be used when you’re placing monitors on a console or a desk. Reflections from a desk surface normally create a boost in the lower midrange. To compensate, this setting applies a bell shaped notch filter taking away 4dB at 160 Hz and adding 1dB at 1.8Khz. The iLoud MTM sounds and kind of looks like a "multimedia" speaker but it clearly enjoys much better design. Tonality is neutral and sound is wonderful as a result. My only beef with it is that it just doesn't get loud even though its amplification specs are better than most budget monitors. I suspect fair amount of headroom is stolen internally to equalize the speaker and give it good bass. So if you expect to play it loud, these are not for you. And most definitely don't think of using them in far field listening. Those mid/high details that hitherto were too subtle, going unnoticed, are now perfectly audible. The corrective targeting of individual elements within the mix is supernaturally easy. That solidity in the bass allied to the level of control is just remarkable for a speaker of this size, too. To top it off, they never get fatiguing.

The result is iLoud MTM, and it changes everything about the sound, accuracy and convenience of reference monitors in today’s modern studio. All new & used goods supplied by Music Matter are warranted free from defects for 12 months from the date of supply (unless otherwise stated). There is not a lot of directivity control but given the small woofers, the situation is not too bad: While the Precision 5 also performed admirably in the larger control room environment, they did feel a tad underpowered for the space. So, to give the Precision 5 a more accurate representation of a real-world room they’d typically be set up in, I decided to put them through the paces at my (much smaller) home studio. In Use: Project Studio Following on from the popular iLoud Micro Monitor, the iLoud MTM introduces a double woofer system and the ability to tailor the sound to the room. The MTM monitors sound amazing. The output is broadly neutral and accurate across the whole frequency range. They’re clear and detailed, and what they reveal in the midrange might just surprise you. The stereo imaging is spot on.

This can help to minimise diffraction – where a soundwave is distorted or modified when hitting an obstacle. It’s not a problem with the lowest frequencies, which pass straight through the case, but can be an issue with higher frequencies. Maximum SPL @ 1 m, playing one speaker on axis: 103 dB from 200 Hz sine wave, 95 dB at 100 Hz sine wave, 93 dB pink noise I placed iLoud MTM monitors on speaker stands which were already situated in an ideal listening position. There’s considerable acoustic treatment in the studio, including bass traps behind each speaker. Measurements are compliant with latest speaker research into what can predict the speaker preference and is standardized in CEA/CTA-2034 ANSI specifications. Likewise listening tests are performed per research that shows mono listening is much more revealing of differences between speakers than stereo or multichannel.Moving away from the sweet spot brought about the expected changes in phase and image clarity, but didn’t have much of an effect on the overall tone. The last button engages the now industry-standard Auto Standby mode. I did experience a bit of inconsistency with the pre-set listening threshold. A few times I encountered the monitors going into standby while I was actively mixing at moderate 70-75dB levels, which was enough for me to turn this feature off to avoid further interruptions. In Use: Pro Studio If you don’t have to move the monitors, and you have space for the slightly larger footprint, the MTM monitors have the advantage of ARC calibration, so you can adapt the sound to suit your room. The enclosure is made from injection moulded plastic, finished in a dark grey. On first glance they could be mistaken for the metal cased Genelec monitors. This means an even more natural, life-like sound, where the speakers “disappear” and you can focus on the music. It also minimizes the ear fatigue caused by traditional 2- or 3-way designs, where different frequencies arrive at your ear at different times. So you can mix longer, with less effort.
