Keyleth, Tiberius, Stitch, Brul, and Helicax are hired by The Clasp to find out who's poisoning the people of Stilben, on whom the Clasp relies for their income. The party discovers that the Myriad is trying to kill everyone in the swamp. When they return to the Clasp, Stitch asks for compensation for a job well done, but gets poisoned by the Clasp for attempting to shake them down. The Clasp then gives the rest of the group 12 hours to get to the bottom of the killings, or Stitch will be denied the antidote. The various pairs - Keyleth and Tiberius; Vex and Vax; and Grog and Scanlan all finally converge at the alchemical laboratory where the poison is refined. There they fight each other, and then some thieves. After the fight Iselda emerges from a mirror, getting a few hits in before putting Grog into a ball.Chrysa-Thul only made a brief appearance in a forest outside of Stilben. It seems that Fendril Vas was not present in this storyline, as Vex'ahlia mentioned that they were being paid "a very small amount" by the town of Stilben to take care of it. Vax is looking out through a storm drain while Vex stands to the side, remarking how she should have let the shark from earlier eat her brother, since he blames her for it. Vex asks why they cannot simply watch for the alchemist from rooftops or the streets, and Vax reminds her that they were ambushed from both the rooftops and streets, so it is either the sewers or they give up. Vex says that they should give up, to which an unimpressed Vax asks if she means that. Vex pauses for a second before asking Vax to simply find the alchemist. As if on cue, Vax spots the alchemist, Zeth, leaving a nearby building. He notes that the alchemist is likely being monitored. Since it is a city, where she admits is Vax's "thing, or whatever", Vex asks where they should go. Though not necessarily a deliberate connotation, there's also some wordplay between "Vox Machina" and the common literary phrase "deus ex machina." Aside from a villain in The Matrix, deus ex machina refers to when a fictional story suddenly drops in a convenient godlike solution to a plot problem - the final moments of War of the Worlds, for example. The phrase has its roots in Greek theater, where actors playing Gods would be lowered onto stage using a crane - the God from the machine. That image feels apt for the The Legend of Vox Machina's D&D origins, where players puppeteer characters in a make-believe world who, more often than not, go on to save the realm heroically. Tiberius suggests that the remaining four of them join forces, but Scanlan declines and he and Grog leave. Tiberius comments that Scanlan is a strange one, but Keyleth comments that she kind of likes him.
