Despite the more monochrome color palette of the film, the remaster allows for every available color to pop. If you're coming to Dawn of the Dead for the first time from a modern horror perspective, then it's important to remember that all of those zombie films you've seen since its release are effectively bastard offspring of Romero's original.

Apparently this is also Romero's preferred version, something recognised here in its selection for Blu-ray treatment, while the other two are on standard def DVDs. It might make a decent future double-bill Blu-Ray project with the UK 1981 Intervision VHS release of Vigilante; another similar film which I do like. The whole film ends with a wonderful, sweet story about how Romero kept the legend of Father Christmas alive for his kids. Disc 4 (bonus features): NEW Zombies and Bikers (59mins) with John Amplas, Roy Frumkes, Tom Savini, Christine Forrest, Tom Dubensky, Tony Buba, Taso Stavrakis and a whole host of zombies and bikers; NEW Memories of Moreville (34mins) - a tour of the mall with Michael Gornick, Tom Savini, Tom Dubensky and Taso Stavrakis; NEW Raising the Dead: The Production Logistics (23mins) with Gornick, Forrest, Amplas and Dubensky; NEW The Fx of Dawn with Tom Savini (13min); NEW Dummies! Things don’t get much better there, as the security guards try to control the group, and it’s not until they overpower and take things over themselves that they have a semblance of freedom. Night may have sown the seeds of the zombie genre, but Dawn kicked the doors down and helped it become one of horror’s biggest subgenres (aside from the slasher perhaps) and a cultural phenomenon.

Secondary hues, likewise, are more full-bodied and varied, particularly the cheerful yellows, warm marigolds, rich oranges and the hearty tan browns. In September 2022, I had the opportunity to acquire something very special; a personally funded 35mm 5K scan of an original Dawn Of The Dead's US Theatrical version print. mix is deep and heavy, pounding us mercilessly with deep waves of LFE from the opening shots of the film. The music scores on both are credited to Argento faves Goblin, but the subtle effectiveness of their contribution to Romero's version is traded in on the Argento cut for something louder and brasher that's a long, long way from the group's sublime work on Argento's Suspiria. If you own the 2008 Universal, I advise you still pick up this package for the new interviews and added theatrical cut. In either case, fans can better make out the stitching and faded creases in the worn leather jackets of the bike gang, the texture of the fabric in the furniture is more perceptible, and Tom Savini's gory makeup work is gorier and bloodier. I transferred the full Exterminator tape, although as of writing I'm not sure if I'll be doing anything with this as it's a film I've only seen once, and didn't think much of. Add to that an amazing extras package that combines new and existing material and you have an unmissable set.
