This is the north half of a detailed plan of Liverpool published in 1890. It is incredibly detailed, showing every road name, paths within the parks, and even individual buildings in some streets (where those buildings were big enough). Not only that, Lime Street is home to Liverpool’s largest and oldest railway station, a bustling transportation hub connecting countless travellers. It’s probably the first place you’ll arrive in Liverpool, whether you’re moving here or just visiting the city for one day. 2. Bold Street An ECHO article from 1970 began: “The man from the planning department pressed out a map headed Pedestrian Network 1970 and talked of the new Liverpool, of street cafes, of green trees where there are now traffic fumes, of the new city of pedestrian ways.” Most of these photos were taken in Liverpool but some were taken in other parts of the region such as New Brighton. In February 1971 the Daily Post said: “The Corporation have over two miles of walkways either under construction or in the planning stage. By 1976 there should be a quite impressive network of these pedestrian roads.”

The house called Mendips is located at 251 Menlove Avenue, and it’s still standing! It was bought by Lennon’s aunt Mimi in 1945 and was where John grew up, often playing guitar with Paul in the glass-panelled porch. There are also concentric circles showing distances from the Town Hall, each one quarter of a mile apart. The Frith images also make a great talking point for young and old, as many older people love looking at our images online and sharing their memories of these places with the younger generation. As trends come and go, businesses change and new developments spring up, it's easy to forget what some of our most-loved streets used to look like. That means that my map is most accurate on the five or six places where I did this, and less accurate in other locations. One day I might add more of these reference points, but for now I hope the map is still very useful. How to get the most out of this map, and how to help It's hard to believe Liverpool wasn't even a city until the 1880s. Prior to that it was a town and a borough.

This unpretentious terrace is, like Ringo’s house, privately owned, but, again – provided you’re not obnoxious it’s totally fine to visit and take a few photos of the outside of the house. The owners and neighbours are used to it by now! FAQs About Famous Streets in Liverpool What is the main street in Liverpool?

I limited myself to the area within Queens Drive for a few reasons. Firstly, I need to stop somewhere! Queens Drive provides the perfect boundary, encircling the city as it does. In the future I may add streets outside this boundary. For neatness’ sake, I’ve clipped roads which cross Queens Drive and head off into the surburbs. My second reason is that by far the most frequent requests for road locations are from within this area. So all in all, it made sense to release this tool with the current data, and expand later on if possible. Accuracy of a map of old streets of Liverpool

There’s also The Grapes pub, where The Beatles used to drink between sets. It’s one of my favourite places in the city! 4. Penny Lane Gore’s/Kelly’s Directories. Many street directories included folded maps of the city. These have been removed and are available separately. Liverpool's seven streets were Bank Street (now Water Street), Castle Street, Chapel Street, Dale Street, Juggler Street (now High Street), Moor Street (now Tithebarn Street) and Whiteacre Street (now Old Hall Street). Most Liverpool Beatles tours will drop you off here for a short time, but, unfortunately, you can only go inside the house on official National Trust tours. 8. Water Street

A lot of people knew about the tunnels, but that was as far as it went – they just knew about them or heard about them,” explains Les Coe, an early member of the Friends of Williamson Tunnels (FoWT). “It was just left at that. But we decided to look for them.” Netherfield Road leading to Everton Terrace. May 5, 1927 (Image: Liverpool Central Library and Archives) Unearthed by our archives, Mirrorpix, many will remember how the area looked in these images, taken between 1980 and 1989.

Tragically, Menlove Avenue also holds a sombre connection to Lennon’s life. It was on this very street that his mother, Julia Lennon, met with a fatal car accident in July 1958. This heartbreaking event had a profound impact on Lennon’s life and shaped his artistic journey. While some of Liverpool's most impressive and historic buildings have been lost over the years, so has its streets. There’s also a refurbished former watchmakers on Seel Street, which again is central but not that close (by Victorian standards) to the other horologists: https://www.liverpoolexpress.co.uk/timely-completion-of-heritage-initiative/For beautiful, historic images from the past have a look at memorylane.co.uk/ and see what you can discover Bromborough Pool Village inspired William Lever to build his own model village at nearby Port Sunlight. Paul Nixon, head of UK data licensing at Findmypast said: "One of the many joys of the Francis Frith collection is seeing how our villages, towns and cities have evolved over time. This is a map of all the old streets of Liverpool within the boundary of Queens Drive (plus a few helpful extra roads at the far north and south). By ‘old’, I mean it shows the streets as they were before vast swathes were demolished in the first half of the 20th century. Therefore it should be a great help in tracing where your ancestors lived and/or worked. For example, you can look up the Welsh streets of Toxteth, many of the courts of Everton, and even the inner parts of the more recent suburbs in West Derby. This Street ABC section is very much in development, but with your valued input we can ultimately make it the definitive reference point for current and former residents researching the old terraced streets.
