Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s he was a frequent contributor to the Catholic press in both Britain and America and a prolific author, translator and editor of books on Christian themes. After twenty years of existence, we are happy, by the grace of God, to have completed two large buildings and a sizable portion of our abbatial church. Father Alban Butler was born in 1710, at Appletree, North-amptonshire, the second son of Simon Butler, Esq.

It's not like there's not a lot of admirable saints, so there's definitely a lot to learn from them, but I feel like a religion that cares this much about formal aspects to the point of having to "convert" people, can't be the best way of finding the Truth.Discover the joy of reading with us, your trusted source for affordable books that do not compromise on quality. A compilation and condensation of the full work of Butler and his lives of the saints of the Catholic Church.

e. by his nephew Charles Butler (London, 1799); and Joseph Gillow's Bibliographical Dictionary of English Catholics, vol. How to live a Christian life of faith is a question every generation of Christians has sought to answer. The author, Father Alban Butler, was born in England in 1710 and the copy I have is not written in American English. These Christians were missionaries to the pagans who lived in what is now modern Europe, they founded churches, monasteries and convents, and performed miracles. Each year that I read this devotional, I found my self meditating on various saints lives and trying to find out more about them.It is on this account we have ventured to designate The Lives of the Saints an historical supplement to the Old and New Testaments. It details the official investigations that have been made into these miracles by professional scientists, and it tells of where these miraculous phenomena can still be venerated today. The introduction to this book lists and describes a number of movable feast days in the Church’s calendar like Advent, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, and Christ the King among others.

After the war he lived for a time on Caldey Island and was profoundly influenced by the monks of Caldey Abbey. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. Donald Attwater (24 December 1892–30 January 1977) was a British Catholic author, editor and translator, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Notre Dame. They also have information on the martyrs of my faith, those who have achieved sainthood, archangels, etc. I enjoyed reading and learning about the daily saints, Doctors, and martyrs of the Church in concise, well-written, prose.

This substantial hardback book, beautifully illustrated with black and white etchings, is the perfect solution for so many Catholics anxious to get reacquainted with the lives of the saints, but who have too little time to read more thorough biographies. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I can't really recommend this book, but suggest you give it a look when I see you all at the holidays! Ulf and Birgitta Ekman With his wife, Birgitta, Ulf Ekman founded Word of Life, a large Pentecostal church, so the news of their leaving Word of Life Church to become Catholics was a bombshell in Sweden.A valuable aid to devotion and a rich source of historical information, Butler's Lives of the Saints, through its concise biographies, remains a helpful and authoritative reference. Families and individuals will find it serves as a source of devotions and adds to their spirituality and prayer life. From a purely entertainment perspective, which certainly isn't how this book is meant to be read, it always strikes me a little funny when it brushes over what would be the more exciting details in someone's biography--I know these aren't the point of hagiography, especially when each saint is described so briefly, but it still comes across amusing to me.
