Huge glow up – Probably more than any other army in the game, Nighthaunt really needed an upgrade, with an old book containing old units and army-wide rules that seemed outdated just as the book was launched. The units are now generally much improved but the battle traits in particular are a lot better. The best case scenario is you deep strike this unit 12” away to pepper something and hold an area of the board. The problem is, why wouldn’t I use Chainrasps for that role? The Craventhrone aren’t going to kill a damn thing anyway, so I’d rather have double the wounds for the same cost. 12” range means you can’t keep them safe from any melee units, and they’re an inefficient screen, an inefficient ranged unit and an absolutely amazing sculpt. Seriously guys, these models are great. End on a high note, right? Wrapping things up

With lots of choices for heroes I’ve used Reiknor, who is a bit expensive at 190 points, because he gives some mobility and is a wizard with combat capability. To get value from him you will need to use him in combat but with only 7 wounds and a 4+ save he can be pretty squishy even with a 6+ ward. He needs to be accompanied by the Spirit Host for their “bodyguard” ability which restricts him to an 8” move. So what does he bring? His combat skills first: Weapon

How to Play Nighthaunt: The Quicksilver Dead & The Scarlet Doom

Slightly changes the wording of Deathless Spirits to cover every model within 12″ of a Hero rather than units wholly within. Mostly useless in a practical sense, both in terms of the ability and actually fielding this in a game like most super battalions. Shroudguard Beacon of Nagashizzar – The Guardian of Souls comes with a spell, spectral Lure which normally heals D6 wounds (or restores models with that many wounds). This makes it a D6+3. Spectral Lure is pretty much why you even have it so this is worth considering. B+ Five Crossboos won’t really have any impact on the game, but bumping them up to ten will take up one of your precious reinforcement points and cost 190 points, more expensive than the excellent Namarti Reavers or even the continually problematic Lumineth Sentinels. This, dear reader, is not a good unit. If you were desperate for ranged firepower, consider Chainghasts. Or, better yet, consider another army.

Hi Kiba ! Those are some good suggestions! With only two casters I think double Endless Spells is a bit excessive, but I could definitely see including the Purple Sun in this list (I'm the Sun King, so I should shouldn't I?). I'm a bit torn on what to take out to include the Purple Sun. I think the Chainrasps are really important for screening so I don't want to lose them. The Spirit Hosts is another option but then my heroes are a bit more in danger. I could also cut a 10 unit of Bladegheists - but then I would have to find something to spend the rest of the points on. Maybe something like: The Nighthaunt book is pretty dry on Command traits. There aren’t a few different tables for each type of commander, it’s just one with 6. They’re pretty mediocre, so many will choose to run Lady Olynder as a General due to her special ability rather than getting a command trait, we’ll discuss what that does in her unit entry but it is pretty competitive. Balefire Blade –Add 1 to the damage characteristic of a bearer’s melee weapon. Solid all around weapon choice. B

Morathi-Khaine and the serpentine Melusai Blood Stalkers are coming off the Priority Targets list, so they won’t give up extra victory points on death. And in light of their petrifying revamp, the Nighthaunt will leave the Prime Hunters list. Poor Army Traits/Artefacts –As a launch battletome Nighthaunts have really mediocre army traits and artefacts.
