A strange world greets the Yorkshire family, one of Red-coats, convicts and a peasantry governed by a wealthy elite.

When d'Artagnan and his father are attacked on the way to Paris resulting in the father's death, the young swordsman seeks revenge on the murderer. Show more Show less Starring Oliver Tobias, James Condon, Helen Morse and Elizabeth Crosby, and produced by Tony Essex, 'Luke's Kingdom' is an epic adventure series set in Australia during the early nineteenth century. The incestual overtones are a bit creepy and apparent almost from the word go, but are intitially so brief you wonder if you are imagining them.

Theres a fair bit of poppy eyed hysterical acting in it, and Oliver Tobias certainly had the looks and charisma to have been a much bigger star than he became. The way the natives are treated almost seems to be an over zealous approach to a normal stereotypical one of either ignoring them of making them out to be the baddies, but although it shows some ill-treatment and injustice, they appear to sit in groups waiting for white man to bring grog or work until they fight or are attacked. The picture is a bit grainy but I remember it being like that when it was first broadcast on telly many moons ago. Nostalgia Central covers the period 1950 to 1999 and contains some words and references which reflect the attitudes of those times and which may be considered culturally sensitive, offensive or inappropriate today. Tobias is excellent as the determined, violent and very flawed 'hero'(you'll see why) who will stop at nothing to protect his family's land, but all the cast are good and the stories are well written and filmed, you will get frustrated at Luke's father, who just does not get it!It was co-produced with Trident Television, the then owners of Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, and aired in 1976 on Nine Network in Australia and ITV in the United Kingdom. Maybe this is the only print available and the market for such a series so marginal that any investment in cleaning it up would never be recouped. It's 1829, Jason Firbeck, a retired naval Leiutenant, recently widowed arrives with his family - Samuel, his elder son, Luke, his second son and Jassy his daughter - in NSW, where land granted by influential friends, supposedly awaits him. To begin with, these opposing views cause great tension as it is unclear who will be the eventual patriarch.
