Description

Cockburn's Special Reserve was originally introduced in 1969 as the first great Reserve Port and since that time its famous fruity and full-bodied quality, combined with a fine dry finish, has been the benchmark for all Reserve Ports. The Cockburn's 2007 Vintage is a very intense purple colour Port Wine, with notes of cassis and a dry, elegant finish. We apologise if we take a little longer in busier periods and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

The sweet and soft tannins provide a smooth and velvety mouthfeel, leading to a long and lingering finish. Just a little heat on the end but this is a very convincing sign that Cockburn is back on form, even if it may not be one of the longest living. Cockburn’s Special Reserve port is created from a variety of high quality grapes, which are all hand picked by Cockburn’s master pickers. The driver will input your year of birth into their device and may then require an ID check to complete the age verification process. The 1977s, undoubtedly one of the great vintages, have matured well and are firmly in their drinking window, whilst the initially structured wines of 1970 have proved themselves worth the wait and are now at their peak. Most of the grapes for Cockburn’s Ports come from its flagship property – Quinta dos Canais – one of the Douro’s greatest quintas. This 642 acre property is the essence of Cockburn’s vintage and other premium Ports, including Special Reserve.

The concentrated wines of 1991 are still for keeping, though Ports from the lighter houses are just beginning to emerge. Most the grapes are picked from Cockburn’s own vineyard but a few are specially selected from neighbouring vineyards, all however are pricked from the spectacular upper Douro valley. Cockburn's Special Reserve is a very fine wine selected for its richness and concentration, from the finest vineyards in the Upper Douro and matured in oak casks for five years. The blend is made with four-fifths being from young youthful wines with the remainder from more mature wines which give the port roundness and a seductive, velvety feel. With rich, full bodied flavours of raspberry, brambly fruit and spices, Cockburn’s fine ruby, retains the red colour and fruit flavours of a young wine. Their different business approach and an uncompromising attitude towards tradition have helped them achieve success in port making. Special Reserve is in its element served with rich dark chocolate desserts, fruit tarts, berry or nutty puds and complements most cheeses incredibly well. Recognisable from its red and yellow bottle and a Christmas favourite, there’s nothing to say you can’t enjoy Warninks Advocaat throughout the year. In the event of any safety concerns or for any other information about a product please carefully read any instructions provided on the label or packaging and contact the manufacturer.

In 1969, with the launch of the Special Reserve, the company successfully planted the previously ignored Touriga Nacional in large numbers. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Cockburn's Special Reserve Port is a rich and full-bodied fortified wine that is aged for up to five years in oak barrels. Merchants were allowed to import Port wine at low duty rate while war with France deprived them of French wines. Its rich concentration of ripe fruit is balanced by the added complexity of spices, all held together by superb structure and balance. The flavour is rich like vanilla custard and thick and syrupy in texture, with that bite of brandy providing a warm and satisfying kick.
