Description

This pedal can be powered by a 9-volt battery, a Dunlop ECB003 9-volt adapter, or the DC Brick™, Iso-Brick™, and Mini Iso-Brick™ power supplies (not included). However, with a clean sound, the default (non script) mode contributes just enough presence to sharpen the modulation effect, which as it happens is perfect for clean disco and funk applications, and of course for any psychedelic journeys you may be embarking on. I wanted something I could repair if it ever broke, that I could run off a pedalboard supply and had true bypass with an LED.

Special feature: The script switch allows the player to switch between the vintage "Script Logo" or the more modern and aggressive "Block Logo" phaser sound. This device has found its way into many of Eddie Van Halen's recordings, adding a shimmery velocity to lead passages or a more dramatic swoosh to muted strumming. The MXR Phase 90 gives a wooshing, swirling sound with a variable speed control that sounds as if the frequencies of the guitar are fading in and out. Tiny adjustments are made to each string where applicable to adjust its length and ensure that the intonation is set just right. For over four decades, the MXR PHASE 90 has been a mainstay on the pedal boards of millions of musicians around the globe.Don’t be fooled by the EVH paint job, this pedal is more than a signature pedal limited to a couple of tones. The Phase 90 contributed to the unbelievable tones on "Eruption," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "On Fire," and "Atomic Punk," plus many other timeless Van Halen tracks. Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

It is a compact pedal that takes up little room on any pedalboard but you will know it's there because the blue LED light is super bright. I included the Internal Feedback trimmer MOD which I figured would give me a preset option of flexibility between both the 'Script' and 'Block Logo' versions. Now you can grab a piece of Eddie's magic with the new MXR EVH 90—a collaboration between Eddie Van Halen and Dunlop Manufacturing that represents a totally redesigned, updated version of the legendary Phase 90. Remember too that it is not just how you set the knobs on a pedal, but where in your signal chain you place it, that will determine the effect it has on your sound. To see a more detailed comparison of the two different modes, check out our spectrographic analyses (below).

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. If however you happen to like how MXR has voiced their phase pedal offerings, and you are a member of the set-it-and-forget-it club, then you know that the classic single-knob pedals are hard to beat.

MXR's legendary build quality and attention to detail are evident, with a robust metal chassis and metal footswitch that feels solid under the foot. The '74 Vintage Phase 90 comes housed in the classic orange finished box and is adorned with the unmistakable Script logo. We don't want any high or low spots as this will mean your guitar will need a higher than optimum action and potentially suffer with fret buzz.
