Please note that JCB can only be accepted if you select Germany, Japan, Republic of Korea or United Kingdom as country of residence in the Book and Fly process. Within the travels, we learn about each country's language, climate, wildlife, landmarks, and traditional food. A Ticket Around the World by Natalia Diaz and Melissa Owens is a fun, informational text about a young boy who travels around the globe to visit friends. This book would not be great for getting students to learn words in different languages but would be a great way to start peeking student interests in other cultures. Along the way, he introduces us to each friend’s environment and customs, and shares interesting facts about each country’s culture, language, food, geography, wildlife, landmarks and more.

I would have the students split up and to pick a country that was mentioned in the book and have them summarize the country’s attributes, and then have the students present their information the class. An unnamed boy with a mop of chestnut brown hair visits friends in 13 countries, offering readers a world tour via his first-person narration as he samples foods, views landmarks, and attends cultural events, among other activities. Also on some pages they had the language that is native to that country, so that could present as a challenge for soe kids, but also be a great growth cultural took. The main character is doing what the words are saying so it just paints a picture inside of your head. As the detailed illustrations provide helpful context, I would recommend this book be used in second to fourth grade classrooms. It includes the languages the people speak, the season, meals that are cooked, and an adventure for each country. I love this book because it is a great multicultural tool to learn about where everyone comes from in the class.

At the end of the book, a page asks many questions to see if the reader remembers specific facts about each place they visited. Each entry discussed the climate, capital city, geography, famous sites, food, and gave you a general idea of how a family might spend their day. The book introduces kids to the idea of cultural diversity through the boy’s adventures and encourages them to appreciate and celebrate differences. The artistic elements are extreme, this book has a lot of text so I would not recommend students to read on their own, however doing it as a class and integrating it with content and a lesson plan would be a fun filled week. A Ticket Around the World, like the title suggests, is a gateway story that teaches the reader about 13 different countries around the world. I really loved this book I thought it was a really good length but also contains lots of good information. For a classroom activity, students could be placed in groups based on the countries or areas of the world that are visited in the book. A Ticket Around the World is written by Natalia Diaz and Melissa Owens and illustrated by Kim Smith.

On each two-page spread of a country’s information, you get colorful illustrations and over six different facts about that country. I liked that the pages feel friendly and they’re not too busy and over-stimulating with information and illustrations (everything is nice and neat). Children can be asked to put a sticker on a map of all the places they have been or on a place they would like to go, giving a summary of each of the places. This gives the reader a world tour via his first-person narration as he samples foods, views landmarks, and attends cultural events, among other activities. Also, as the reader, you won't get lost trying to figure out just where on the page you're supposed to start reading. We piggyback on the young boy's imagination and take a trip around the world visiting countries such as Japan, Mexico, Kenya, Canada, and many more.
