I recently purchased the 3 diac version (to accompany the big Beast of a package initial LP release), and my only. But even still, after thirteen years of waiting for new material, Tool fans deserved a better thought out album.

From the the very first note, this album takes me back to cruising down the highway, Maynard and the boys blasting from the tape deck. I just want to play the record and having to open the big heavy book and take a new disc out after every side feels like more effort than it’s worth. The sound is so unbelievably rich and being a huge fan of Danny Carey, there are sounds from him I can hear on vinyl i could never hear on mp3 or cd. It is without question that time and money has been spent to ensure such a good pressing of these 5 discs as possible.From the avant-garde percussion and awkward synths of 'Chocolate Chip Trip', to the almost-ethereal ambience of 'Legion Inoculant' and the riff and crescendo heavy 'Pneuma', it's a wild thing of beauty. The song is presented on a Blu-ray DVD that features a ground-breaking short film directed by Dominic Hailstone. They're still masters of odd time signatures and 10+ minute songs but other than that, it was tough to find anything that really stood out to me while listening.

This is all subjective, of course, and really not that important in the end, but still worth mentioning. It plays quiet, every instrument is represented well in the mix and the heavy sections rip on a good system. A fine example of what the group have always done so well - running with wolves like Mogwai, only with far more metal sensibilities, and a damn-sight bigger helping of experimentalism, when this bad boy arrived in 2019 it shot straight to the top of the US Billboard 200, the third consecutive record from the group to do so.Good to have them back though, especially when the band appear to have used their time away productively.
