It also goes a long way to explaining how the Artifact works, what it is trying to do, and why Altman seems immune to most of its effects. I appreciated the way Evanson at least went to the trouble to play up the mysterious nature of the Marker and how it plays into, and perhaps shapes, the strengths and weaknesses of the organisms around it.

His novel The Open Curtain (Coffee House Press) was a finalist for an Edgar Award and an International Horror Guild Award. Some elements of Chuck Beaver's original idea for the lore can be found in the game files of Dead Space 2, presumably having been cut following his disagreements with Ben Wanat. You will really hate these bastards by the end of the book, just don't expect any sort of payoff for your bitterness. You get the impression that the developers/EA want the meat of the story to come out in the games, not any tie-in media, which is fair enough - but the insights you do get become a bit thin on the ground, and there's not really enough 'novel' here to be an enjoyable read even without learning anything new. Since the original Dead Space had not fully developed its lore and never elaborated on what exactly the goals of the Nicole Brennan hallucination were and why she seemed to be helping Isaac Clarke, Chuck Beaver and Necromorph designer Ben Wanat were left in charge of the lore for Dead Space 2 and had to choose a definitive direction for the Markers and the hallucinations. All in all, I found very little to like in this book except for it bearing the Dead Space logo on the cover; perhaps the next attempt will do better.

Although Altman is intrigued by the Marker, he certainly doesn't adore it in the way the believers (his girlfriend among them) do. In the same section, Altman is described wearing some sort of "protective suit" as well as using a weapon that fired saw blades. Evanson has a tendency to describe everything in a streamlined fashion, absent any flair or creative description. This cut content consists of a scrapped audio log describing how humanity was seemingly created by an alien force that was at war with the Markers and how the hallucinations were the result of a "genetic defense mechanism" implanted from this ancient race, and a number of scrapped lines of dialogue between Isaac and a benevolent Nicole guiding him to destroy the Marker. The artifact itself, as we know, operates on multiple plains; the electromagnetic field it projects creates paranoia, hallucinations, religious fervor, and worse.Furthermore, Stevens informs Altman of his dark plan to publicly found a formal religion in Altman's name, which will ready mankind for its ultimate evolution, when a "new" Marker has been made or another one found, which he speculates will not be "broken" (creating monsters rather than granting eternal life) like the previous one was.

Which leads me to another problem I had with this book, I felt that if i missed even a paragraph i would'nt be a able to understand the rest of the chapter. The Unitologists worship divine "Markers", relics they belief can grant them eternal life, together - the unity in their name.Evenson begeht hier leider denselben Fehler, indem er die psychotischen Zustände der Charaktere zum einen viel zu schnell beschreibt und zum anderen zu repetitiv. Based on its success, publisher Electronic Arts expanded the series into a " trans-media franchise", with pieces of the series lore distributed through means outside the main series including spin-off titles, movies, and printed media. C. after Altman releases knowledge of the Marker to the world; Ada is killed, while Altman is tortured by Markoff's agents. At a point in the story, a victim just turned into necromorph after being bitten (like zombie) but it never happened or told so in the game. One such technician, Michael Altman, a geophysicist, discovers gravity fluctuations coming from the center of the crater.
