They might invite you to a glorious feast in one moment but already be planning your execution behind your back. Let's not forget in the original version the involvement of the Ultramarines was very much a footnote with them being cut off from the fight and therefore in a position to hold the Imperium together in the aftermath of the siege of Terra. The opening of the “loyalist” Dark Angels in Angels of Caliban is when they relieve a world of Ultramar that has suffered occupation by a stray force of World Eaters, remnants of Lorgar and Angron’s Shadow Crusade into Guilliman’s star realm.

The rebels come across as petulant adolescents throwing a mega-tantrum because they didn’t get the prime posting and role in the ongoing conquest of the galaxy. It sets the mood for him as a character in the wider Legion history, giving a sense of tragedy and good intentions, an idealist whose hand is ultimately forced by an ever-increasing web of schemes all around Caliban. Better yet Thorpe delivers an acceptable reason for not executing Curze and that was always going to be the hardest part to swallow, at least for me. I never would have considered it possible for one of the traitors to mount a feasible defense of their crimes in court but Curze doesn’t do too badly for himself in exposing Lion’s war crimes.

According to Luther, Caliban possessed a vicious intelligence that extended to its "living" forests and beastly wildlife. The encounter between Lion and Curze is exhilarating in a way that the majority of the primarch duels have so far failed to grip me. This, combined with his ancestry (the son of a witch and a daemon), results in his wild and dangerous nature. The Dark Angels and their Primarch see security as the ultimate goal, regardless of the consequences.

But then, he is also using those aspects to achieve his goals in the hunt for Curze, which ended with a very cool showdown that feels like a natural conclusion to their rivalry that has been going on for far too long now. Ever since Fallen Angels though Gav Thorpe has been the main driver behind them, writing several short stories.I really would like to know exactly where these events occur because as far as I know I have missed only a few shorts and audio dramas. At its heart was a core sub-dimension from which Vashtorr assembled the other components of the Dissonance Engine: Ouroboros, Plagueheart, and eventually the Tuchulcha. Likewise the wider Dark Angels story, although it might require a little catching up to be fully on top of things – it’s been 27 books and over 7 years since Fallen Angels, with their story previously continued via a novella and a handful of short stories. The last full novel we had gotten for the Dark Angels was Fallen Angels by Mike Lee several years ago. This is a watershed moment in history for the Dark Angels as the veil behind some of their deepest mysteries is finally pulled back and we learn just how close the Legion skirted towards damnation.

Large portions of Caliban were covered with dense forests, which in turn were inhabited by many dangerous forms of wildlife.

As a matter of fact, I am glad this happened, as Gav's take on the Dreadwing was interesting and noticeably different from the Ravenwing or Deathwing action from his 40k novels, or even the Raven Guard. With Angels of Caliban, Gav continues many of his earlier plotlines that were introduced in the Horus Heresy series, some of which are actually offshoots of what we learned in Angels of Darkness, and that’s perhaps the best compliment for the book itself. I love Thorpe writing the Dark Angels and I cannot wait to see the eventual cataclysmic confrontation between Lion El’Jonson and Luther. But when word comes of the Night Lords' attack on Sotha, the Lion's brutal actions bring Imperium Secundus once again to the brink of civil war. My big disappointment in that regard was the lack of Lord Cypher reveal - but at least that might yet come to pass in a follow up, retroactively.

DarkChaplain is a big nerd who spends too much time reading and thinking about books, organizing them on his ever-growing shelves, and yet increases his backlog by the month. One of the advantages of writing a mix of novels and short form fiction is that I can revisit ideas, characters and events and examine them from a different angle or expand on them. In the past Dark Angels books the events on Caliban always played second fiddle for me to what the Primarch was doing during the crusade, but here Gav has really made me feel invested in them. The Lion rebuked Luther before approaching close to Horus to say that he was surprised by the action of his ships being used by Horus for the battle. They are all grappling with this new reality, not to mention their own roles in the Imperium or rebellion. Before the Lion could consider leaving, his forces on the ground sent him an image of a massive tow
