Description

Tulips sometimes suffer from pest and diseases, especially where grown in the same soil for long periods. Growing conditions may also affect their health. If you miss out on buying and planting bulbs in autumn, gardening retail outlets and supermarkets often have bulbs grown in containers available in spring. Ideally buy these before they come into full flower. Dig the area and loosen the soil about a foot (30 cm.) deep. You should add some compost or dried manure to the soil. Also, add some 5-10-5 or 5-10-10 granular fertilizer to help the bulbs grow. Mix the existing soil, amendments, and fertilizer, just like a cake batter until well blended. Use a piece of square paper for the tulip pattern and 1:2 ratio paper for the stem and leaf patterns. The center of the square is where all the half creases intersect. Hole any one of the corners (of the square paper) and bring it to the center of the square.

a small and large origami paper – we offer a printable template with the sizes that we used in our project and you can grab it bellow (along with the printable diagram that’s perfect to use in the classroom). In late fall, move the potted plants into a refrigerator or a cold frame for outdoor chilling. The plants will need to be chilled for at least 12 weeks. Fringed: Fringed or ruffled petal edges in many colors, sometimes with contrasting colors on the fringe; late-season bloomers with 12- to 18-inch stems. Jeff Chambers has created this great video of our 2009 Coast to Coast. It's one of a series of videos… Read more…

You can modify this project to fit all ages, so it’s a great and easy origami for kids, even as young as preschoolers as they can only make the flower, without a stem, while older kids and kids at heart can make the whole project, with a flower stem. The soil must be well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic, fertile, and dry or sandy. All tulips dislike areas withexcessive moisture. Prepare the garden bed by using a garden fork or tiller to loosen the soil to a depth of 12 to 15 inches, then mix in a 2- to 4-inch layer ofcompost. Rembrandt: Once prized for their colorful streaks and mottling, no longer grown commercially because the coloring was caused by a virus that spreads to other tulips; plants now advertised as 'Rembrandt' are cultivars that mimic the look of the originals. Prepare a square paper (we’re using a 15 cm x 15 cm sheet) from a colored craft paper of your choice. Make vertical and horizontal half creases and then make half-diagonal creases. Almost there! You have to fold your diamond shape in half not, bringing the top and bottom corners together.

We do recommend using origami paper for any folding project, however you can just use regular print paper and can even have the kids decorate their own, if you decide to use our printable template? Fosteriana: Also known as emperor tulips; large flowers, often with pointed petals and available in many colors; bloom mid-season; plant 8 to 15 inches tall. Sow tulip seeds on the surface of small pots filled with potting mix. Cover the seeds with a bare covering of additional potting mix (1/4 inch). Rainy summers, irrigation systems, and wet soil are death to tulips. Never deliberately water a bulb bed unless in a drought. Wet soil leads to fungus and disease and can rot bulbs. Add shredded pine bark, sand, or any other rough material to the soilto foster swiftdrainage.Don’t put them with apples and other fruit. Apples and bananas give off ethylene gas, which helps fruit ripen but kills the flower bud inside any bulbs. If you don’t have room in the fridge, don’t put tulip bulbs in the freezer; it will kill them. Instead, keep the tulip bulbs dry and in a cool, well-ventilated area like an unheated garage. Tulip Planting Tips In most northern areas, you can keep the bulbs in the ground over winter. (If they are in containers, though, they will need extra protection.) In warm climate areas (Zones 7b to 10), to increase the chance for healthy blooms next year, you may need to dig bulbs up after foliage has browned/died and store for about 10 to 12 weeks in a cool/dark place (such as an unheated garage, or in a bag in the refrigerator crisper away from fruit/veggies, some of which emit ethylene gas that can damage the bulbs/developing flowers [ideally, it’s best to use a separate refrigerator away from food]) to give them a needed period of cold. Alternatively, in mild climates you can treat your tulips as annuals and buy new pre-chilled bulbs for the next plantingseason. Viridiflora: Late season blooms on 12- to 24-inch stems with distinctive green streaks in their petals.
