He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London, where his research focused on harmonic and functional analysis. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including Calculus, Calculus: Early Transcendentals and Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, as well as a series of precalculus texts. NEW SUBHEADINGS: Additional subsections within chapters help instructors and students find key content more easily to make the text an even more helpful teaching and learning tool. So, if they put all the ODE material into a single chapter that would be wonderful. The truly missed opportunity at the end of Multivariable Calculus is that the student is equipped to study some of the lower level Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) that are out there. Such as just finding characteristic equations and such would be a huge boost to the students. PDE books notoriously don't write out step by step examples, but Stewart could have put them in at this location and doing a few basic problems. Now, perhaps, a new chapter in my life unfolds where I feel the urge to potentially acquire a PhD, but it has been quite a long time since I have studied all aspects of Calculus. I have, for the past decade primarily been teaching some variation of Calculus 1 or Pre-Calculus, so I am rather decent with those subjects. While I remembered quite a bit from Integral and Multivariable Calculus, it has been quite some time since I have flexed that muscle and worked problems. I decided to return to an old favorite of a text and got the latest edition of this wonderful tome written by James Stewart.More challenging exercises called "Problems Plus" follow the end-of-chapter exercises. These sections reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem. This work needs to be declared, standard in High-school Mathematics. If you desire a career in Engineering, Mathematics, Scientists, Architecture. Integration by Parts. Trigonometric Integrals. Trigonometric Substitution. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions. Strategy for Integration. Integration Using Tables and Technology. Discovery Project: Patterns in Integrals. Approximate Integration. Improper Integrals. Review. Problems Plus. The traditional method has the advantage of being cleaner, and the proofs are simple enough that they can be presented to starting calculus students in a mathematically rigorous way. However, it has several distinct disadvantages: Arc Length. Discovery Project: Arc Length Contest. Area of a Surface of Revolution. Discovery Project: Rotating on a Slant. Applications to Physics and Engineering. Discovery Project: Complementary Coffee Cups. Applications to Economics and Biology. Probability. Review. Problems Plus.

QUALITY EXERCISES: With over 8000 exercises in all, each exercise set carefully progresses from skill-development problems to more challenging problems involving applications and proofs. Conceptual exercises encourage the development of communication skills by explicitly requesting descriptions, conjectures, and explanations. More challenging “Problems Plus” exercises reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem. CLEAR EXPOSITION: Dan Clegg and Saleem Watson have remained true to James Stewart's writing style speaking clearly and directly to students, guiding them through key ideas, theorems and problem-solving steps, and encouraging them to think as they read and learn calculus. Vector Fields. Line Integrals. The Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals. Green’s Theorem. Curl and Divergence. Parametric Surfaces and Their Areas. Surface Integrals. Stokes’ Theorem. The Divergence Theorem. Summary. Review. Problems Plus.

Who We Are.

PROBLEM-SOLVING EMPHASIS: George Polya’s problem-solving methodology is introduced at the beginning and reinforced throughout. "Strategies" sections help students select what techniques they'll need to solve problems in situations where the choice is not obvious and help them develop true problem-solving skills and intuition. The Area and Distance Problems. The Definite Integral. Discovery Project: Area Functions. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Indefinite Integrals and the Net Change Theorem. Writing Project: Newton, Leibniz, and the Invention of Calculus. The Substitution Rule. Review. Problems Plus. STEM APPLICATIONS: Stewart/Clegg/Watson answers the question, "When will I use this?" by showing how Calculus is used as a problem-solving tool in fields such as physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, and the social sciences.

STEM APPLICATIONS: Stewart/Clegg/Watson answers "When will I use this?" by showing how calculus is used as a problem-solving tool in fields such as physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, and the social sciences. Modeling with Differential Equations. Direction Fields and Euler’s Method. Separable Equations. Applied Project: How Fast Does a Tank Drain? Models for Population Growth. Linear Equations. Applied Project: Which Is Faster, Going Up or Coming Down? Predator-Prey Systems. Review. Problems Plus. Every concept is supported by thoughtfully worked examples—many with step-by-step explanations—and carefully chosen exercises. The quality of this pedagogical system is what sets Stewart's texts above others.Stewart was gay and involved in LGBT activism. According to Joseph Clement, a documentary filmmaker who is working on a film about Stewart and Integral House, Stewart brought gay rights activist George Hislop to speak at McMaster in the early 1970s, when the LGBT liberation movement was in its infancy, and was involved in protests and demonstrations. Several new application based problems in the book have been added to help the students strengthen the understanding of concepts and make the leap to discovering the impact of Calculus in its various applications. Even students who take two semesters of calculus learn about exponential and logarithmic functions fairly late, which means they don't have time to get used to these functions. For those who wishes to learn advanced calculus, however, perhaps there is a need to peruse another text because in a way this text is not very close to real analysis; it is a broad text in terms of topic but the depth is not that much, though it does make an effort by not eliminating crucial proofs and explanations.

Stewart's text offers an extensive collection of more than 8,000 quality exercises. Each exercise set is carefully graded, progressing from skill-development problems to more challenging problems involving applications and proofs. The wide variety of types of exercises includes many technology-oriented, thought-provoking, real, and engaging problems. In the “early transcendentals” method, the logarithmic and exponential functions are introduced shortly after the definition of the derivative.
